3rd UAE MEDICAL STUDENTS CONFERENCE

Pre Conference Workshop

1. BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (RASHID HOSPITAL)

Basic Life Support consists of a number of life-saving techniques focused on the "ABC"s of pre-hospital emergency care:

  • Airway: the protection and maintenance of patient airway including the use of airway adjuncts   such as an oral or nasal airway
  • Breathing: the actual flow of air through respiration, natural or artificial respiration, often   assisted by emergency oxygen
  • Circulation: the movement of blood through the beating of the heart or the emergency measure of CPR

BLS also includes considerations of patient transport such as the protection of the cervical spine and avoiding additional injuries through splinting and immobilization.

2. BASIC SURGICAL TECHNIQUES

A lecture and hands-on class designed to teach a variety of basic surgical techniques, including: donning/gloving, surgical instrument descriptions, using surgical instruments, suture material classification, and basic surgical knot tying. The workshop intends to offer students a chance to focus on surgical skills, free from the pressures of a clinical setting or the class-room. The emphasis is on the value of practice and primary skills learning. We aim to ensure that the camp is relevant, practical and an enjoyable learning experience for basic surgical skills.

3. ECG & X-RAY INTERPREATION

The course is in a self-programmed format whereby the student reviews chest films and ECG’s with accompanying case histories and answers. The chest films selected represent commonly occurring problems in the primary care setting and provide additional means by which students can correlate their knowledge of pathophysiology and physical assessment (theory and skills) with findings demonstrable on x-rays. The ECG Interpretation will include:

  1. Anatomy and physiology of the heart and conduction system
  2. Recording a 12 lead ECG
  3. The normal 12 lead ECG and cardiac axis
  4. Atrial & Ventricular abnormalities
  5. Ischaemia, infarction and the ECG
  6. Rhythm recognition

Aims/Outcomes

  • Learn to interpret 12 lead ECGs & rhythm strips using a systematic approach
  • Understand cardiac axis and its impact on the ECG
  • Identify the effects on the ECG following infarction
  • Identify cardiothoracic anatomical structures demonstrable on a chest film
  • Recognize a normal chest radiograph.
  • Recognize and name the radiographic signs of pathological X-Rays.

4. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The workshop will be useful for preclinical as well as clinical medical students who are already involved in research or those who would like to embark on a research project in future. Even if actual research is not undertaken it is considered essential for trainees to acquire an understanding of research methodology so that they are able to critically appraise research reports in the literature. Teaching sessions will address: steps of designing a research, developing a research idea; study designs, their advantages and disadvantages; sampling types and techniques and research proposal development. There will a one and a half hour group session at the end which will allow participants to design and present a research plan.

5. SUCCEEDING IN LICENSING EXAMS

     This unique Forum will be conducted by doctors who have successfully completed licensing exams or are currently preparing to appear for licensing exams like the USMLE. They will provide information regarding application procedures, requirements and eligibility criteria for application and registration will be discussed. Students will also be given tips on preparing for these exams.

6. COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS WORKSHOP

In this hands-on workshop, you will become more aware of your personal communication patterns, of how you best foster the clear and open exchange of information. You will learn new strategies and get the chance to practice new skills, building on your strengths and expanding your understanding. Insight is always linked to behavior. You will leave the workshop with greater confidence in your ability to create more cooperative and productive relationships, and to avoid costly misunderstandings and conflict.

7. EVIDENCE BASED MEDICINE

Evidence-based medicine is the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients and integrating individual clinical expertise and the best external clinical evidence from systemic reviews. The philosophical origins extend back to the mid-19th century Paris. The workshop will be an interactive session consisting of:

    • An orientation lecture and overview;
    • A series  of presentations and lectures;
    • An interactive searching skills workshop entitled " Internet Searching skills ( Medline)";
    • Small group tutorials
